Newsletter Response: What Type Are You?

I agree that ectomorphs are more susceptible to musculoskeletal injuries. At the same time, however, anyone will risk injury if they don't train and rehabilitate properly, no matter what their body type is. I see many mesomorphs in the office who are very active with exercise and sports. While ectomorphs are more likely to sustain a sprain/strain, mesomorphs and endomorphs are just as likely to cause damage over time. It isn't as noticeable because it isn't a traumatic injury, but mesomorphs often have excessive tightness in muscles that build up over time. These are repetitive use injuries and are just as serious, if not more so, than a sprain that isn't rehabilitated properly.
Stretching properly before and after exercise can limit these repetitive use injuries. When people come into the office with either an acute sprain/strain or muscle tightness due to repetitive stress, we often use Active Release Techniques to treat the area. Active Release Techniques, or A.R.T., is used to stretch the soft tissue in order to facilitate proper healing of the injury. A.R.T. is good for acute injuries because it allows the injured tissue to heal properly and minimized scar tissue in the area. With repetitive use injuries, including carpal tunnel, A.R.T. is used to stretch the tissues that have become abnormally tight over time. This allows the tissue to move and function properly, while also freeing up any nerves or vascular structures that may be compromised by the excessively tight tissues.
